We’ve provided useful templates and helpful guidance about what you need to include in your child protection policies and procedures.
Writing your policies and procedures is just the first step – your organisation then needs to make them happen. To help you with the things you need to include, think about:
- Communication – to staff, parents and children and young people. Consider different communication needs and methods. Tell everyone why procedures are needed and answer any questions they may have.
- Training and awareness – for all workers at the initial stage and then on a continuous basis for updating staff. Specific training for those with lead or named responsibility for child protection.
- Induction – new workers need to have safeguarding procedures and their responsibilities included in their induction before they start to have contact with children.
- Monitoring and supervision – of the use and application of the procedures. Workers also need to be asked about safeguarding issues and awareness when discussing their progress and review of their work.
- Recording and information sharing - are these accurate and within the guidelines of your procedures. Do workers need support or additional training in recording and sharing information with each other and other agencies?
- Recruitment and vetting – do all the recruitment processes take safeguarding into account?
- Managing allegations or incidents within your organisation – after an allegation or suspicion about a child protection concern has been investigated, there are likely to be strong feelings from staff, parents and children and possibly within the wider community, which will need to be addressed. there could be issues around:
communication – rumour or fact
guilt or blame – if suspicions have been around for a long time
impact – on individuals, of the nature of what occurred and to whom
gaps in the organisation in terms of roles and posts held.
Plan opportunities for sharing information, support and debriefing.
Your communication strategy should include responding to possible media enquiries.
To review what your organisation has or needs to develop you can use the organisational healthcheck or other exercises which can help explore the extent of your contact with children and the type of activities you provide.
