A safeguarding event for the third sector was held in Leeds in December 2009. Key speakers from the Home Office and the Safe Network delivered presentations about the Vetting and Barring Scheme and safeguarding in the third sector.

The event included three sets of workshops which were delivered in the morning and then repeated in the afternoon by Action for Children, Government Office Yorkshire and Humber and Barnardos. The workshop topics were:

  • When does child welfare become child protection?
  • The roles of the Local Safeguarding Childrens Board and Council for Voluntary Service.
  • Safeguarding responsibilities of the sector and its trustees.

Local young people were on hand to help throughout the day and joined in with tasks such as taking photos, booking delegates in and meeting and greeting. During breaks at the event there was a market place with displays from different organisations including - NCVYS, Children England, Community Matters and Comic Relief, this also was a good opportunity for delegates to network.

In the afternoon session Evender Harran from the Safe Network gave a key note speech, which also included delegates receiving a Are they safe? pack.

The evaluation highlighted that the event was highly successful and that the day had raised awareness around safeguarding and about the Vetting and Barring Scheme. Here are some of the comments from the delegates:

'Well presented event, the information was easy to understand'

'The pack from the Safe Network is excellent'.

'A very good and informative event, thanks'.

'A very very useful event'.
