A series of workshops aimed at helping local Derbyshire voluntary, community and independent (VCI) organisations to increase their awareness of current safeguarding best practice has been well received.

The free 'Keeping Children Safe' one day workshops were run by the NSPCC in association with Derbyshire GRID. Held in three different community locations (Bakewell, Ripley and Bolsover) during September and October, the sessions were open to all non-Ofsted VCI organisations.

NSPCC Senior consultant and workshop organiser, Willma King, said: “The workshops were very successful and brought together a mixed group of professionals from across the Derbyshire voluntary, community and independent sector.  The sessions showed that there is a real commitment from local organisations to provide the best possible safeguards for the children and young people they work with and we are pleased to have been able to add to this by providing additional avenues for information and support.”

Jodie Stirrup from the National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs attended the first session in Bakewell and said: “As well as exploring how safeguarding works in the VCI sector,  it was a great chance to network with other VCI workers, share best practice and discuss potential joint projects.”

Independent School Counsellor Sue Lewis said: “The workshop provided a really useful update to the constantly changing world of Children's services and safeguarding, especially for people like myself who work independently.”

Chris Harris from South Derbyshire CVS took part in the Bolsover session and commented: "The workshop has given me new ideas to include in training sessions. I will definitely sign up to NSPCC inform."
