Prime Minister David Cameron will launch the government’s National Citizen Service scheme today, through which summer volunteering placements for 16-year-olds will be organised by charities, voluntary groups and businesses.
The National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme will be piloted next summer from June to September and will provide around 10,000 places which are aimed primarily at schools leavers.
The scheme will aim to give every 16 year old the chance to learn new skills that will help them to make a positive contribution to their community.
Placements will mainly be within charity and social enterprise groups and activities will include outdoor challenges, organised tasks involving visiting and helping the local community and developing skills and, in consultation with local communities, designing a social action task.
