We are delighted to announce that representatives from the British Youth Council (BYC) have agreed to take part in the 'Active Communities, Safer Children' launch conference for the Safe Network Core Standards on 17 February 2011.
Young people from the British Youth Council Advisory Group will deliver a key note speech called ‘What makes it safe? Perspectives from children and young people’. Their presentation will provide an insight on the safety issues that are of concern to children and young people attending group activities, such as: child protection, health and safety, bullying and inclusion, and transport. They will also talk about the importance of young people of knowing that their voices and opinions are being heard.
The presentation will also explain the methodology and findings from a recent national web-based survey, designed by the Advisory Group, that the BYC have undertaken for the Safe Network.
This ground-breaking research was called ‘Your Experiences: Being Safe’, and was a key strand to the development of the core standards. Over 450 children and young people took the opportunity to participate in the survey.
The BYC members will also be running an hour-long interactive workshop at the event, they will focus on the relationship between effective safeguarding work and children and young people’s participation in services. They will discuss the advantages of involving young people in the development and maintenance of safeguarding arrangements.
The Advisory Group members will also be taking an active part in the panel debate at the end of the day.
