Formatting guidelines

Keep your paragraphs short.
A general rule is to avoid extending beyond five lines of text per paragraph.

Use headings
People tend to skim when they read online. Your heading should very clearly identify what you're talking about in that section.

Using Lists
Bulleted and numbered lists and indented quotes can also be useful for putting some visual variety in your text.

People will tend to skim a bulleted list in more detail - try to keep lists down to less than six items. One trick to make lists more useful for readers is to write the text so that a key word, or the main point, is at the start.

For example:

  • Employees will receive a week of holiday pay.
  • Volunteers will not receive holiday pay.

As opposed to:

  • For holiday pay, employees receive a week.
  • There's no holiday pay for volunteers.

Other formatting
Use of colour, underlines and caps can be useful to help convey the 'feeling' behind a point.  However be careful of overdoing this as excessive use can make your message hard to read or in some cases even angry and rude and for this reason may not be approved by our moderator.
